Friends Of WISE Advisory Board

The Friends of WISE are key to our efforts to reach out to a broad spectrum of alumni and friends throughout industry and the general community. Members of the Advisory Board help WISE by:

  • Opening doors and making connections that WISE cannot make on its own
  • Lending their expertise to enhance current WISE programs, create new opportunities and keep WISE in tune with the needs of industry and the community
  • Helping to increase the WISE endowment so that WISE can offer scholarships that are competitive and attract high-quality students
  • Leveraging personal and professional industry contacts to augment support from corporations and foundations
  • Increasing sensitivity to issues of gender within the business community
  • Providing corporate support by offering internships, part-time work and research opportunities to WISE undergraduates
  • Offering to host a Friends of WISE Advisory Board meeting or an alumni/friends event at their business location or home
  • Learning about the University and its science, and engineering programs, asking questions and staying involve

Mission
The Friends of WISE Advisory Board works with WISE to achieve ten important objectives:
  • To provide business perspectives and expertise to assist WISE in both its curricular and non-curricular activities;
  • To promote critical links between WISE students and faculty and leading professionals in business, science and technology;
  • To work with faculty and staff associated with WISE to create internships, research opportunities and part-time positions in the private sector for WISE students;
  • To assist in establishing a favorable climate for private giving to the program;
  • To assist WISE to secure funds for undergraduate scholarships, grants to support student research and other activities to ensure academic excellence;
  • To assist in the establishment of an annual WISE Lecture Series by identifying professionals in science and technology to invite to Stony Brook and to help to raise funds to support such a series;
  • To raise funds to enhance the high school component of WISE;
  • To promote WISE within the corporate community and to its alumni and friends;
  • To assist the WISE Director and associated faculty and staff in identifying and building the networking and capabilities of the College;
  • To promote WISE within the corporate community and to its alumni and friends.

    Roles and Responsibilities
    Members of the Friends of WISE Advisory Board will be responsible for:

  • Attending Council meetings
  • Identifying potential members of the Friends of WISE Advisory Board
  • Becoming familiar with the goals and activities of WISE and working to support and enhance them
Financial Support and Fund Raising
  • Making an annual personal and/or corporate financial contributions to WISE. It is vital to have 100% participation from all members of the Friends of WISE Advisory Board
  • Identifying potential contributors to WISE and assisting to secure financial resources from third parties to include monetary gifts and purchases, as well as in-kind donations
  • Making fund raising presentations and solicitations on behalf of WISE to corporations, foundations, and individuals as appropriate
